Dragon races- part 2

Stardust wasn't flying anymore. She was falling. The sword wound on her wing had struck deep, freezing it in place. and one wing was not enough to keep her in the air. She crashed into the ground, ironically passing the finish line. Kestrel jumped off and saw what was wrong with her beloved dragon.
Then she saw it. There was a painted horn bead caught on the bone that was poking out of the gash. A bead that had, until a minute ago, been on the hilt of Nightshade's sword. She screamed and then started crying.  Medic elves ran over but it was too late. Kestrel collapsed as Stardust's eyes went dark.

Dragon Races- part one.

Kestrel petted her frost dragon, Stardust. It was the first race that the screeching white reptile that she was bonded to would be competing in. Racing against her for the first round was her best friend Nightshade and his ember dragon, Abyss. Stardust had just reached five years of age and was now eligible for small contests.  Suddenly the caller goblin screamed out "Stardust, Abyss and their riders to the start line! Ow! I said it! I said it! Stop hitting me already!" Kestrel and Nightshade led their dragons to the start area.
“I'm going to crush you” said Nightshade.
“Don't bet on it” Kestrel replied.
The starting horn blew and the dragons took off, speeding towards the distant finish line. Kestrel urged Stardust to go into a bullet roll- a very simple move that put you far ahead of your opponent. Nightshade waved his long, deadly- looking sword, signalling to Abyss to speed up. Then he felt it hit something. He pulled it down. It was covered in shimmering, ice-blue blood. Dragon blood.
Frost dragon blood. Stardust's blood.
